Sanofi is Canada’s largest bio-manufacturer focused on the manufacturing, research and development of vaccines. The campus in Toronto, Ontario is home to over 2000 employees with the majority focused on vaccine work and is steeped in Canadian history tracing back to the inception of Connaught Antitoxin Laboratories founded in 1914. This footprint creates a significant advantage for Sanofi’s Canadian business as vaccine production and supply are seen as a matter of national security. Supporting the growth of our footprint through government collaboration is a Sanofi priority and the company is committed to leading in Canadian vaccines manufacturing, research and development. The Medical Head of the Canada Vaccines business therefore plays a pivotal leadership role expected to champion the site growth and leverage it towards achieving local affiliate business goals.
Canada is also Sanofi’s 6th largest vaccine market globally with significant potential for growth. The country’s National Advisory Committee on Immunization (NACI) is globally influential and uniquely holds a seat on the US Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP). This makes success with NACI very impactful for the success in the US with ACIP. With a very rich academic community, Canada has many global leaders in the field of vaccinology and thus further influencing beyond its borders. Thus, the Canadian Medical team plays a critical role in shaping immunization practice in Canada, the US, and internationally. The Medical Head of the Canada Vaccines team will take accountability for the impact of Canada at home and beyond its border, staffing and driving the performance of a local team aligned to that expected impact.

Main Responsibilities:
Strategy (25%)
Oversee annual process of developing, reviewing, and approving proactive, high-quality, and valued input by the Medical team into business brand plans including Country Medical Plans (CMP) and integrated Evidence Generation Plans (iEGP)
Support Global Medical franchise initiatives where Canada is a key market
Lead the development and implementation of Medical strategies/tactics/activities and ensure efforts are coordinated and closely aligned with cross-functional teams (e.g., Canada Commercial, Public Affairs, Market Access, Regulatory, etc.)
Participate in the US franchise Medical strategy development and execution as it pertains to shaping ACIP recommendations
Leverage Canada’s biomanufacturing footprint into local and global medical road maps and follow through with execution of strategies strengthen the standing of Sanofi vaccines as a function of localized manufacturing, research and development
Participate in developing and executing strategies to foster the growth and enrichment of the biomanufacturing footprint in Canada
External Stakeholder Engagement (25%)
Represent and maintain proactive and broad relationships with key contacts in the Canadian healthcare environment (e.g., Government Health Authorities, External Experts, Thought Leaders, Academics, Healthcare Professionals, Patient and Patient Advocacy Groups) as part of a coordinated stakeholder plan to secure involvement in stakeholder discussions and position Sanofi Vaccines within key healthcare initiatives
Develop strong relationships with the leadership of critical national and provincial vaccine decision-making bodies as well as the heads of major medical associations and academic institutions
Champion the Toronto site with external government stakeholders, academic institutions and other relevant research and medical partners
People Leadership (20%)
Lead and develop a high-caliber Medical team, fostering a culture of collaboration, and support, ensuring efficient and dynamic ways of working with internal colleagues (e.g. Regional Medical Head North America- Vaccines, Commercial, Compliance, Public
Provide leadership to ensure high-quality delivery of Medical activities to both internal and external stakeholders
Ensure the team is educated on diseases, the competitive landscape, the company’s products, the biomanufacturing footprint and has the tools and resources to provide relevant updates and responses to unsolicited requests
Oversee team coaching, development, and career pathway planning
Foster growth and development through clear performance expectations and regular coaching/feedback, encouraging a culture of continuous learning, and improvement
Internal Collaboration/Communication (20%)
Represent the Medical perspective on the Canadian Leadership Team
Collaborate closely with North America and Global Medical leaders to optimize vaccine
Collaborate with cross-functional leaders on the Toronto site towards site growth goals
Foster an internal culture of scientific excellence and public health urgency to drive and motivate employees across the Canadian footprint
Clearly articulate and follow-up on needs from NA support functions (e.g., evidence generation, scientific content) to ensure Canadian team priorities are adequately addressed
Partner closely with Canada Commercial teams (i.e., marketing, sales, market access, etc.) on cross-functional strategy and tactics in a compliant manner
Drive compliance culture change for Medical governance adoption across Canadian Business Units through education and process development
Provide Medical support, education, and guidance to the vaccines franchise while adhering to corporate compliance guidelines
Coordinate resources within the Medical team to ensure timely review and approval of promotional and non-promotional activities
Contribute Medical input to advisory boards and scientific programs in alignment with global and local policies
Support Medical Information services for the Vaccines franchise
Develop relationships with key internal contacts to share best practices and contribute to Global Medical strategy
Medical Operations (5%)
Support the Medical Information service with relevant Medical expertise for the Vaccines franchise in relation to our products in order that customer queries, internal and external, can be answered accurately and promptly
Adhere to company-defined processes for the selection of and agreement to commercial terms with vendors
Adhere to internal procedures and tools to ensure the compliant and efficient operation of the “Purchase to Pay” process
Support the Medical review of suspected adverse reaction reports associated with our products in conjunction with the Pharmacovigilance (PV) function, enabling PV to report appropriately to the regulatory agencies and Corporate PV so that prevailing legal and Corporate requirements are met
Provide Medical opinion to Regulatory Affairs so that regulatory strategies can be developed
Data Generation (5%)
Maintain knowledge of the Vaccines marketplace, stay current on leading-edge product development efforts, and provide perspective to the business on the treatment landscape
Lead gap analyses and development of innovative approaches to the evidence generation (RWE/HEM) and clinical plans to meet the needs of the local and global BU including new study designs and alternative methodologies and support the implementation of clinical programs
Closely collaborate with US franchise Evidence Generation Advisors to support the planning, execution, and impact reporting of the Canada evidence activity portfolio
About you
Basic Qualifications:
Doctorate level education: MD or equivalent Medical degree preferred. PhD or PharmD will be considered
10+ years pharmaceutical industry experience (vaccine experience preferred) covering the leadership of a broad set of Medical activities, including clinical trials, Medical, compliance, and external engagement
5+ years' experience in managing teams
Ability to travel up to 20% of the time
Preferred Qualifications:
MD with clinical care experience in the field of primary care, vaccines, infectious disease, and/or immunology
Specialist accreditation and/or other professional certification(s)
Recognized by other vaccine experts as being expert in vaccinology or a related discipline
Infectious diseases and/or vaccine experience either from academia/research and/or preferably from the pharma industry with relevant customer knowledge
Strong understanding of the Canada Healthcare system

Strong understanding of government, academic and political landscape in Canada and the US
Ability to lead, manage, and develop teams
Experience in setting, balancing, and managing a budget
Detailed knowledge of regulatory requirements and guidelines, industry codes of practice/standards and standard operating procedures, and experience of their implementation within the business environment
Deep knowledge of the principles and practice of Medical including clinical trial design, management, analysis, and reporting, including GCP
Knowledge of the structure and management of the Canadian Health System including government tender system and unique business and Medical care dynamics specific to each province
French language fluency is an asset
Vaccines and/or infectious disease experience
